Your practical plan

Work through these steps

  1. 01

    Complete the condition record

Photograph walls, floors, ceilings, doors, windows, appliances, fixtures, meters, and existing damage in good light. Keep original files with dates.

  2. 02

Send issues through the required channel

Use the lease’s inspection form, portal, email, or written process and keep delivery confirmation. Separate urgent habitability or safety concerns from cosmetic notes.

  3. 03

    Review access and responsibilities

Confirm keys, fobs, parking, mail, trash, pets, guests, maintenance entry, renter insurance requirements, and who handles each utility.

  4. 04

    Check alarms, locks, and exits

Test what the lease permits you to test and promptly report missing, damaged, or nonworking safety equipment to property management.

  5. 05

    Protect the paper trail

Keep the signed lease, addenda, deposit receipt, inspection, photos, service requests, and property contact details together until after move-out reconciliation.
